Signs of Spring (and How to Find Them)

Signs of Spring (and How to Find Them)

Garth Brown |

What are some signs of spring? This question we will answer from our own experience. Calendars have no point for signs of spring, they just tell you the official date or if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow or not.

Flowers

When we say “ Signs of spring” one of your first thoughts is flowers, but do you know what types of flowers they are? One of the first is snow drops, another is hellebores. The final one on this short list is crocuses. (These flowers are planted.)

Birds

Birds of spring have always been one of our favorites so we are excited to write about them. One of the first is a Robin, another is the Canada goose. These both migrate back North in March. You may think Chickadees migrate but they don't, they stay all year round. These wonderful birds are also quite fluffy. They make a sound like ‘chickadee-dee-dee-dee-dee.’

Weather

Have you ever had a nice spring and then another snowstorm? Believe it or not it is a sign of spring. It happens because the polar vortex breaks down. What is a polar vortex, you may ask? The polar vortex is a line of cold arctic weather. When the polar vortex breaks down a gust of freezing wind and snow comes rushing down. This snowstorm doesn’t always happen but if it does it will occur in March or April. Another scenario is a tropical storm hits the breaking polar vortex and freezes into a snowstorm. These too are signs of spring.

Ground

More signs are under your feet. The ground will become soft and wet and the snow banks will melt. Bare spots aren’t always a sign. If it is a large bare area then it is most likely a sign of spring. If not, it is just a random, weird patch or the wind blew the snow off it. You will also most likely notice the warmer weather but that’s sort of the point of this whole paragraph.

When these occur, pull out your muck boots and tromp around.
