1800 Gallons of Water for a Pound of Beef?

There are many claims about the amount of water it takes to produce a single pound of beef, some as high as 2000 gallons. While there are places in the world where livestock can definitely have a detrimental impact on the water cycle - particularly arid areas like California and Arizona, if they are fed on irrigated forage - in other places, like much of the Midwest and New England, they waste virtually no water if properly managed.
